Can Your Body’s pH Be Too Alkaline?

This question has appeared from time to time and calls for a visit in the news of today: Can our body’s pH be too alkaline?  A friend of mine who helps run a very good health food store near me reported that she had been raw and had been alkaline for some time when a person approached her and warned her “there were diseases that could come from being too alkaline too.”

She experienced something I have taught a lot about, on how much our thinking affects our health.  She immediately became acidic (without changing anything) and has stayed acidic since that time.

This calls for a questioning of the issue to see if we really should be cautioning anyone not to get too alkaline.

My first step in such searching is to ask myself the question: What does nature suggest?  Clearly, we have the physiology and digestion of frugivores and, as such, should be enjoying a delightfully alkaline state in our blood most of the time.

The foods we would eat in a natural setting would leave us with an alkaline pH and in cultures where they do not know about checking and worrying about their pH, they tend to stay alkaline if they are eating a natural diet and living a lifestyle close to nature.

This establishes that alkaline blood is the natural state, but still does not establish whether we can be too alkaline.

On a side note, I often wonder if perhaps we would all be better off if the pH discussion (and many others) had only taken place in a few alternative healing schools where they used it as a test to help them create health plans for their clients without telling them anything new to worry about or mess up.

Some people just mess up anything that which they have the chance to think.  Fixing this human failing requires learning that you can be wrong and still loved; that you can take fine care of your experience of life; that you are lovable whether you get it right or not.

Unfortunately, the love of many has “waxed cold” to quote a very old scriptural prophecy about our time.  The result has been that love not felt or really given, in the sense of absolute love.  We do not share and impress that love in kindness, self-restraint, discipline, effort, and trust in each other in the life experience.

Well, let me get back to the point.

Theoretically, if one gets too alkaline, there will be as much malfunction as when someone gets too acidic.  From a purely theoretical standpoint, one could stop metabolizing key nutrients if they are too alkaline.  One could experience their blood not carrying oxygen if too alkaline.  One certainly could fail should they not hydrate or use water efficiently if too alkaline.  These are theoretical possibilities, however, not empirical realities.

There are four key reasons for this:

1. Stress is the middle name of just about everyone in modern society.  Stress always results in immediate pH lowering to a more acidic state.

2. Sickness results in immune response, which results in a state similar to stress, where the blood gets thinner and more active and more acidic.

3. Modern diet and the toxic world around us tend to create clutter in the blood and diminish the blood’s ability to carry nutrients.  This inefficient state of the blood will inevitably result in the body becoming more acidic to try to speed the nutrient flow to vital organs.

4. All known diseases today exist only when there is a pH that is slightly lower (more acidic) than ideal.  This means that no known disease occurs while being too alkaline.

Two more things before going on:

First, if someone wanted to sabotage the health of the world, that person could put things into the environment that would cause rapid shift to the too alkaline state.  We are not well prepared to handle this.  Of course, as soon as people became afraid of dying from it, our blood would shift right back to acid and we would heal!

Second, the reality of being too alkaline (pH too high) exists as the product of, not the cause of, a disease.  Certain malfunctions in the body buffering systems (designed to keep the pH stable and healthy) can result in a too alkaline state.  Such a state would not be the cause, however, but the outcome.

The conclusion, then, is that there are no diseases, under normal conditions, that are the product of one’s pH being too high.  However, there are a few principles to discuss about this that will help us care for our health more wisely.

Principle 1: Sudden alkaline shock

Sudden alkaline shock is what some professionals create when treating cancer.  The healer might put the person on a program that includes several very important things, but one of those is sudden alkaline shock where the alkaline foods and herbs and habits result in such a dramatic shift up in pH that the body goes too alkaline and often starts to oscillate.

By oscillate, I mean that the body becomes extremely alkaline and then overcompensate back to acidic and then, because of the alkaline program, it goes to extreme alkaline again.  This is vital to get the body’s immune system to clear out all cancer (well, also, what we think can cure cancer almost immediately).  The immune system functions higher when the body is slightly acidic and the extreme alkaline moments actually reduce the size and virulence of the cancer.  Many healers seem to use this system very effectively for treating cancer.

For example, I took a small group on a healing and meditation retreat into the high mountains of Wyoming.  We camped at 10 or 11 thousand feet and made day hikes up as high as 12 thousand 3 hundred feet.

While there, we drank only spring water coming from a glacier right above the lake near which we camped.

In addition to this, we took along a totally raw choice of fruit (limes) and some totally raw energy bars that were highly alkaline and healing; you can find the recipes on (www.KalsSchool.com) on the downloads page — available to registered users.

Being a herbalist, I also planned for us to eat many of the wild greens along the way.

While this sounds like a good program, it actually had one serious drawback — the fact that we would all be stuck in extreme alkaline shock.  Because of the spring water, which was, itself, extraordinarily alkaline, we were stuck in alkaline and could not get back to acidic.  Further, alkaline water does not hydrate well and we had gone to a higher altitude where we needed more hydration help, not less.

The result was weakness and extreme dehydration.  We had not thought to bring along a watermelon or distilled water or some vinegar even, to make for a slightly acidic hydration source.  We just cavalierly kept drinking from the spring and doing half a dozen other things to make ourselves alkaline.

This was unwise and made it hard to make the trek down the mountain!  When we got home, we ate large amounts of watermelon and rehydrated in just a few hours.

Sometimes, acidity is necessary for survival while over alkalinity can be a hazard.  Even in serious illness, it is important for the body to be able to regain a slightly acidic state in order for the immune system to work well.

This is the natural way of things.  Most of the time the body stays alkaline, but it is easy to switch back to acidic because there are no unnatural or extreme alkaline agents in the body.  The body will switch to acidic to clean up, to kill invaders, to hydrate rapidly, to kill cancer, to heal rapidly, to deal with threats, and so forth.

Therefore, we stay alkaline to keep disease away, but when disease strikes or finds its way in, we want the body to be able to switch back and forth freely.

This leads to the conclusion that we should watch out for alkaline substances and programs that are as extreme as to attempt to manipulate the body in an almost drug-like way to be extremely alkaline.

Some programs about which I have heard are like this and, if used at all, keep to a short time frame, such as two weeks.  These are programs where no acidic foods are taken, where water is alkalized before drinking it, where supplements that are alkaline mineral based are used, where extremely alkaline fruits or supplements are taken every day, etc.

Rather a person should adhere to the basic alkaline rules taught at KalsSchool.com, which are that we keep our body clean; eat only what nature provides and work on improving the way we think and what we believe about life and ourselves in life.  We also drink distilled water, which is slightly acidic and, as such, is very usable as water to flush the system and to hydrate as much as water can hydrate.  Most importantly, water flushes the system.

Alkaline water does not do this well at all.

Principle 2: Stress and cleansing

Stress and cleansing always result in an acidic state… perhaps I should rephrase that — stress and cleansing always involve an acidic state.  This is because the body does everything faster and with more aggression when it is acidic and is calmer and quieter when it is alkaline.

The person who wants to stay, overall, more alkaline should be aware that cleansing should be done intensively and then followed by a healthy, natural diet and meditation, healthy thinking and believing and loving life, feeling that it is okay to be loved and wrong at the same time and feeling that he/she can handle life for him/her.

Additionally, when one eats under stress, the food becomes a poison.  The person will generally digest the food to be acidic (if she/he digests it at all) and then the person will find that his/her body will oscillate asynchronously — meaning at the wrong times and out of balance with nature and harmony and personal peace and health.

Finally, when one is under a lot of stress and the stress management is not working (I think this happens to all of us some times) one should not drink lots of pure distilled water by itself.  Distilled water works so well for flushing the system that a problem arises when stress is high.  Normally, the body protects its vital nutrients from water and keeps them protected while flushing away wastes and deposits.  Under extreme stress, the body kicks out vital nutrients and loses control over them.

Thus, when stress is high, we make herbal teas or drink water with lots of lemon in it or sea salt stirred into it or some such thing that will make it less aggressive to vital nutrients, without interfering with its ability to flush out wastes.

Principle 3: Seek wise solutions

i. Avoid unnatural means of alkalization, such as chemicals and alkaline water.  If there is some, need to use such things, keep it to two weeks and no more.  If you already have an alkaline water system, add lemon to it before drinking it.  This will help.  I would also alternate by drinking distilled water periodically to keep my body well flushed.

ii. Keep your water acidic by drinking distilled water, by adding lemon or vinegar, or by making an herbal tea that is not too alkaline.

iii. Use sodium sources for natural pH mitigation.  This includes celery and carrot juice, sea salt, celery seed, seaweeds and so forth.  This manages pH without creating alkaline shock.

iv. Exercise helps to keep a natural smooth oscillation wave going that helps the body go through healthy cycles of alkaline and acid states.  Of course, exercise uses up the nutrients you are eating to build new you, so any exercise program should include plenty of really healthy, natural, live food.

v. Emphasize digestion always.  Whether stressed or not, digestion is the thing that is most supportive or destructive, depending on whether it is working or not.  Eat raw fruit 20 minutes before each meal, take ¼ teaspoon of cayenne pepper in a little water 15 minutes before each meal, chew your food lots, and enjoy it fully.  Seek peace with everyone, everything, and yourself in your heart before you take a bite and stay that way or stop eating until you regain it.

vi. Keep your body nourished and clean with live foods and at least seasonal cleansing.  Eat a wide spectrum of healthy food and eat with the seasons as much as possible.

vii. Understand that the advantage to using whole, live herbs, instead of isolated supplements for your alkaline and cleaning is that they will generally allow the natural oscillation to continue to take place.

I often go to sleep thinking about the cup of coffee I am going to have the next morning.  I adore it!  Whether your morning coffee is an estate-grown brew or just the best supermarket blend you can afford, these basic rules from Eating Well Magazine’s editors and contributors will help you learn how to make coffee to prevent unwanted bitterness and almost guarantee a satisfying cup of coffee every time.

 Rule 1: Buy fresh beans.
Without question, coffee is best when used within days of being roasted.  Buying from  local roasters (or roasting your own) is the surest way to get the absolute freshest beans.  Be wary of buying bulk coffee from supermarket display bins.  Oxygen and bright light are the worst flavor busters for roasted beans, so unless the store is conscientious about selling fresh coffee, the storage tubes coated with coffee oils, which turn rancid.  Coffee beans packaged by quality-conscious roasters and sold in sturdy, vacuum-sealed bags are often a better bet.

Rule 2: Keep coffee beans fresh.
Always store opened coffee beans in an airtight container.  Glass canning jars or ceramic storage crocks with rubber-gasket seals are good choices.  Never refrigerate (roasted beans are porous and readily take up moisture and food odors).  Flavor experts strongly recommend against ever-freezing coffee, especially dark roasts.  Optimally, buy a 5 to 7-day supply of fresh beans at a time and keep at room temperature.

Rule 3: Choose good coffee.
Snobbism among coffee drinkers can rival that of wine drinkers, but the fact is that an astonishing world of coffee tastes awaits anyone willing to venture beyond mass-marketed commercial brands.  Specialty coffees that clearly state the country, region, or estate of origin can offer a lifetime of tasting experiences.  Look for 100% pure Arabica beans.  The cheap alternatives may contain Robusta beans, noted for their higher caffeine content but harsh flavors.  Arabica devotees a term commonly link “Nasty” to Robusta coffees.

Rule 4: Grind your own.
Coffee starts losing quality almost immediately upon grinding.  The best-tasting brews come from beans ground just before brewing.  Coffee connoisseurs prefer to grind in expensive burr mills (e.g., Solis, Zassenhaus, Rancilio), but affordable electric “whirly blade” grinders (e.g., Braun, Bodum) will do a serviceable job, especially if the mill is rocked during grinding to get a fine, even particle size.  (Scoop for scoop, finer grinds yield more flavor.)

Rule 5: Use good water.
Nothing can ruin a pot of coffee more surely than tap water with chlorine or off flavors.  Serious coffee lovers use bottled spring water or activated-charcoal/carbon filters on their taps.  Note: Softened or distilled water makes terrible coffee-the minerals in good water are essential.

Rule 6: Avoid cheap filters.
Bargain-priced paper coffee filters yield inferior coffee, according to the experts.  Look for “oxygen-bleached” or “dioxin-free” paper filters (e.g., Filtropa, Melitta).  Alternatively, you may wish to invest in a long-lived gold-plated filter (e.g., SwissGold).  These may deliver maximum flavor, but may let sediment through if the coffee is ground too finely.

Rule 7: Do not skimp on the coffee.
The standard measure for brewing coffee of proper strength is 2 level tablespoons per 6-ounce cup or about 2 3/4 tablespoons per 8-ounce cup.  Tricks like using less coffee and hotter water to extract more cups per pound tend to make for bitter brews.

Rule 8: Beware the heat.
T hot water will extract compounds in the coffee that are bitter and not pleasant.  The proper brewing temperature is 200°F, or about 45 seconds off a full boil.  (Most good coffee makers regulate this automatically.)  Once brewed, do not expect coffee to hold its best flavors for long.  Reheating, boiling, or prolonged holding on a warming platform will turn even the best coffee bitter and foul-tasting.

Rule 9: Keep your equipment clean.
Clean storage containers and grinders every few weeks to remove any oily buildup.  At least monthly, run a strong solution of vinegar or specialty coffee-equipment cleaner (e.g., Urnex) through your coffeemaker to dissolve away any mineral deposits.  Rinse thoroughly before reuse.

6 Reasons Why the Law of Attraction May Not Be Working for You

1. You are doing it wrong

So, you have watched “The Secret”.  You have read about the Law of Attraction and its scientific principles.  You done all your visualizing and asking the universe for stuff you want.  Nevertheless, you just cannot seem to “manifest” anything.  Well, in that case, the answer is simple.  You are doing it wrong.  A little internet search will show you how you did not learn about the “real Law of Attraction” or “the Secret Behind the Secret”.  So you see.  It is not like the Law of Gravity where it works the same for everybody.  No, the Law of Attraction only works if you know how to do it right.  You still have a lot to learn before you will ever do it “right”.

2. You are not trying hard enough

Therefore, they told you to believe and the Universe will give it to you.  Nevertheless, the Universe is not manifesting it to you.  Probably, you do not believe hard enough.  For it to work, you have REALLY to believe.  Even if you have .00000000000000000000001% doubt, the Universe is not going to give you jack.

With a lazy attitude like that, it is no wonder the Universe did not manifest you that new jacket!  I would not manifest one for you either with such a lack of effort on your part.

3. You are just too negative

Yep.  By being too negative, you brought it all on yourself.  Oh, you might think the Law of Attraction is not working, but it IS working.  It is getting all those negative thoughts and kicking your ass with them.  It is like Rhonda Byrne, Author of “The Secret” said when asked about people killed n the Holocaust or 9-11:

“The energy and life of each of us has always been and will always be.  In a large-scale tragedy, like 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, etc., we see that the law of attraction responds to people being at the wrong place at the wrong time because their dominant thoughts were on the same frequency of such events.”

In case you did not figure that out, it means negative thoughts caused people to be in the wrong place and killed them.  Think about it.  If believing that people are trying to kill you causes you to die, that is the Law of Attraction in action.  In addition, it is all because you are a scared little negative twit.  Think about it.

4. You’re not spending enough money on Law of Attraction books, training, or products

If you really want the LOA to work for you, you need to show commitment.  So go out there and spend more money on it.  On Amazon, there are over 1,000 books with “Law of Attraction” in the title.  Moreover, you think all these Law of Attraction coaches are out there helping people free because they are manifesting winning lottery tickets all the time;  hell no.  They need to earn a living.  In addition, if you are too cheap to support the people teaching you about the Law of Attraction, then it is obvious that you do not deserve anything from the Universe.

5. The Universe does not like you for some reason

We at DSP regret to tell you that it might be possible that the Universe just does not like you for some reason.  We are sure the Universe has a good reason for it.  I mean, we like you.  We think you are OK.  Nevertheless, the Universe can be a real jerk sometimes.

We hope you do not take it personally.  The Universe kills hundreds of thousands of people just for kicks.  However, do not forget, in the end it is your entire fault.  As Rhonda Byrne says, if the universe kicks your ass it’s because your

“dominant thoughts and feelings were in alignment with the energy of fear, separation, powerlessness, and having no control over outside circumstances, then that is what they attracted”.

6. There is no law of attraction

Well, we hate to have to mention this one, but let us just put it out there.  The Law of Attraction may not be working for you because THERE IS NO LAW OF ATTRACTION.

What, you mean there is no Law of Attraction?

Well, think of it this way.  Every year, Santa Claus doesn’t bring me a gift.  Is it because:

a) I do not believe enough in Santa, or

b) There is no Santa?

Hey, we do love Santa here at DSP.  Nevertheless, we are not going to pin our Christmas hopes on him just because there is no Santa.

So are we saying that someone made this Law of Attraction all up?  Yeah.  Probably, People make stuff up all the time.  In addition, just because we would like to believe it is true (Hi again, Santa) does not mean that it is.

Besides, if there were a Law of Attraction, which would mean that negative thinking is what causes all the bad things that happen in the world–floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.  Moreover, frankly, that is ridiculous.  We’re all for suspending disbelief sometimes, but seriously now, are you willing to tell kids in Darfur that negative thinking is causing their starvation just so you can cling to the hope that the Universe will manifest you a new jacket?

What Your Starbucks Habit Really Costs You

It is getting a little more expensive to have a Starbucks habit.

The Seattle-based coffee company said Tuesday that it would hike prices by an average of 1% in the Northeast and Sunbelt regions, where for roughly five years prices did not rise.

Starbucks is after the lead of other food companies, including McDonald’s and Chipotle, which have hiked prices in the past year to cope with rising commodity costs.

The company said the average price of a “tall” — the smallest drink — brewed beverage would rise by 10 cents in New York.  This morning the price hike was already in effect, as caffeine cravers shelled out $2.01 for a cup of coffee, up from $1.91.  The coffee-house allows for some regional pricing, so the real cost of your morning habit could vary.  However, that could easily bump the price of a large — “venti” — latte over $4 a cup, not including tip.

If one of your resolutions is to cut costs this year, it might be worth noting what your coffee habit will cost you over time.

If you buy one $4 latte each day, that coffee habit will set you back $28 a week, about $120 a month and $1,460 per year.  After five years, not including tips, you have slurped away $7,300.00.  If you account for missed investment returns, the loss amounts to roughly $9,300 (assuming a 9% average return).

After 10 years, your Starbucks habit costs you a car.  Moreover, after 30 years, the cost is $239,891 that you drank away (including investment returns), could have bought a house.  Over 40 years, the Starbucks habit could reduce your retirement nest egg by an astounding $634,428 — enough to generate an income of more than $2,600 a month.

No one is suggesting that you give up your daily jolt of Joe.  (This would be a particularly unlikely suggestion from me — the person whose caffeine addiction built that impressive tower of latte cups.)  However, you might want to consider a cheaper way to go at it.

Costco, such as, sells a 2.5-pound bag of Starbucks French roast for $22; A couple of gallons of milk will run another $7.  For that $29 — roughly the cost of a week of barista-made lattes — you can have a pot of lattes every day for at least a month.  Your net savings is $91.

Invest that savings in a diversified portfolio of stocks and you could have your jolt and your retirement plan too.  Based on these numbers — and investment returns of 9% annually (about the historic average) — the amount you save by brewing your own Starbucks coffee could be worth $481,108 at retirement 40 years from now.

How Often Should You Publish New Content on Your Blog?

Once you decide to start a blog, you will need to decide what your goals are for your blog.  If you want to grow your blog and attract new readers (and keep them once they visit), you will need to put some thought into your blog posting frequency.

Blog Content is Key

In the blogging world, a commonly used phrase is, “it’s all about the content.”  In short, that means that the most important part of your blog is the content you publish through your blog posts.  What makes your content most compelling is a combination of your topic, your opinion, your writing style or voice, and your blog’s freshness.  Your blog posting frequency directly ties to the freshness of your blog.

The Theory Behind Blog Posting Frequency

Put it this way, would you buy a newspaper everyday if the article in that paper never changed?  Probably not, however, if the articles are different each day, you are far more likely to buy a new newspaper every day.  The same theory applies to blog content.  If you do not update your blog with a new post, there is no reason for people to visit.  There is nothing new for them to see.

The number one reason most people go organic is to avoid potential exposure to inorganic chemicals.  The FDA has a maximum acceptable level of food contamination by chemicals used during farming and processing.  Unfortunately, it seems like every month there is a new study contradicting previously trusted medical thresholds for trace chemicals in our diet.  From antibiotics and hormones in milk and meat, to mercury levels in fish, to trace pharmaceuticals in our public drinking water, we can potentially consume small amounts of chemicals at every meal.

Can these trace drugs accumulate to dangerous levels?  How do they interact with one another?

It is impossible to test these questions because there are too many variables affecting the results.

Are there maximum levels of pesticide residue allowed in coffee?  How much of this residue is left after washing and roasting?  Does the residue break down into a radical component that is potentially more dangerous?  Coffee grows in tropical locations that are subject to weather variables and insect infestations, both problems that could change the levels of pesticides used during the growing season.  Would the same amount of residue remain on beans heavily sprayed in one area versus beans in another?  Farms handle these situations differently.  They use different types and amounts of pesticides, and they certainly process coffee in different ways.

Reason Number Two:

The second reason to go organic finds its roots in the global nature of coffee.  It centers on this question:  “If you know something is going on that is potentially dangerous and do nothing, do you share any of the responsibility of the consequences?”

As an educated nation, we understand that certain chemicals can be useful in one situation and dangerous in another.  DDT is an amazing pesticide, but it nearly caused the extinction of the Bald Eagle.  Chlorofluorocarbons, CFC’s, were widely used as refrigerants, propellants, and cleaning solvents.  These compounds break down ozone in the upper atmosphere and therefore contribute to increased radiation levels making it to our lower atmosphere.  While we have made the decision as a country to stop using these products, developing nations still use these chemicals as affordable solutions to common problems.  How do we know what chemicals are being used in other countries?  We do not… but what we can be sure of is the safety of the products from the farms that are certified organic and not using chemicals.

Organic Farms avoid the pesticide issue altogether.  By practicing ecologically friendly farming techniques, they are able to optimize their crop yield while also lessening their impact on the environment.  When considering that the organic food segment in America has grown 30% in the last few years, combined with increased global awareness and responsibility, the future looks bright for farmers ambitious enough to go organic.

• Image filenames should have a relevant name, ideally with a keyword in it.
